Google Business Profile management, in the order that matters.

$175/mo. Categories first, reviews second, completeness third — because that is roughly the order of how much each one moves the map pack. Every reply written by AI, read and approved by a human before it posts.

Why this is the first thing we fix

Of everything you can control in local search, the Google Business Profile is the biggest single lever — roughly a third of the weight. Reviews are another sixth and climbing. The website matters, but it takes three to six months to matter. The profile moves in days.

So if you call us with a broken profile and a decent site, we will tell you to buy this before the SEO retainer. It is a smaller number and it works sooner.

Categories: the part nobody revisits

Most owners pick a primary category during signup, in a hurry, and never touch it again. It is the highest-weighted thing on the profile.

What we do instead: search your three main terms on Google Maps, write down the primary and secondary categories of every business ranking above you, and find the ones all three share that you do not have. Then set one precise primary and about four accurate secondaries. Four is not arbitrary — profiles carrying roughly that many secondaries show the best average map rank, and stuffing more in does not help.

Accuracy is the constraint. A category you do not actually serve is a lie that Google will eventually notice.

Reviews: velocity beats total

A business with 40 reviews, four of them from this month, generally outperforms one with 200 reviews that stopped in 2023. Recency is what the algorithm and the customer both read.

We send review requests against your completed jobs, and we answer every review that comes back — within 24 hours, targeting an 80%+ response rate across the whole profile including the old ones nobody replied to. The replies mention the service and the city naturally, the way a human would, and never as a keyword drop.

What we will not do: incentivise. Offering a discount for a review is explicitly against Google’s rules and puts the listing at risk. Asking, in person, at the end of a job, is both allowed and more effective.

Service area: the limit we will not cross

A service-area profile can list up to 20 areas, and there is no bonus for filling all twenty. Google is explicit that a service area should not extend beyond about two hours’ driving time from where you actually operate.

It matters more than people expect, because proximity to the searcher is around 55% of map pack ranking and SEO does not override geography. One profile cannot legitimately cover three metros — which is why our own service area is ten South Bay cities and not the state of California.

Three things that get profiles suspended

Keywords in the business name. Works briefly, then the spam update catches it. The August 2025 pass suspended profiles for exactly this.

A displayed address on a service-area business. If you work out of a van and a home office, the address has to be hidden. Showing it is a common suspension trigger.

A PO box or virtual office for verification. Not accepted. Neither, sometimes, is a VoIP number — have a fallback ready before you start verification.

What we do not claim

We do not geotag photos: controlled testing killed that one and we took it out of our own service description rather than keep charging for it. We do not claim weekly posts move rankings: a nine-week study across 441 keywords found zero movement, so we post for trust and click-through and say so. We do not remove reviews, and we do not suppress them. We answer them.

Straight answers

Questions we get on the profile.

Is a bot replying to my customers?

No. AI drafts the reply, a human reads it and approves it before it posts. Nothing goes live unattended, and you can veto any reply. On anything sensitive — a safety complaint, a billing dispute, a review that names an employee — we call you before we write a word.

Can you remove a bad review?

No, and neither can anyone else who is being honest with you. Google removes reviews that violate its policies, which we will report where it applies, but a genuine unhappy customer stays up.

What actually works is the reply. A specific, non-defensive owner reply that names the failure and says what changed reads better to the next customer than a five-star average with silence underneath it.

Should I offer a discount for reviews?

No. Incentivising reviews is explicitly prohibited by Google, and it puts the profile you depend on at risk for a handful of stars.

Asking is fine and it is what actually moves the number. Ask on every completed job, while you are still standing there. A steady trickle of recent reviews outperforms a large lifetime count that stopped growing two years ago.

Do weekly posts help me rank?

No. A controlled nine-week study across 441 keywords found zero ranking movement from posting.

We still post, and we tell you exactly why: posts occupy space on your profile, they show a business that is open and paying attention, and they give somebody comparing three plumbers a reason to pick the one who looks alive. That is a conversion and trust argument, not a ranking one.

What about geotagging the photos?

We do not do it, and we removed it from our own service description when the testing came in. Adding GPS coordinates to photo metadata before upload has been debunked by controlled testing — Google strips it and it has no ranking effect.

We upload real photos anyway, because a profile with current photos converts better and photo count is part of profile completeness. We just will not bill you for a ritual.

How many categories should I have?

One precise primary and about four genuinely accurate secondaries. Profiles carrying roughly four secondary categories show the best average map rank, and past that you are padding.

We pick them by searching your main terms on Google Maps, recording the primary and secondary categories of the three businesses ranking above you, and adding the ones all three share that you are missing. Categories are the single highest-weighted thing on the profile you can control, and most owners set them once at signup and never look again.

Will you put my keywords in my business name?

Never. "Dave's Plumbing" stays "Dave's Plumbing" — not "Dave's Plumbing | Emergency Plumber San Jose Water Heater Repair".

It does work briefly, which is why people do it. The August 2025 spam update suspended profiles for exactly this, and a suspended profile takes weeks to recover if it recovers. We will not risk your listing for a short-term bump.
